Assignment 2B: Benchmarking

Look at the short biographies and portraits (and if possible, résumés) of other designers. When you find a good one online, post a link with a brief description in the comments of this post. If you find something offline, make a note of what it is and where you found it in the comments. If possible scan or borrow it so it can be shared with the group.

    Architect: Bernard Tschumi

Tschumi is world-wide known for his theoretical writings and architectural works. Some of his well known works (and my personal favorites) include “Violence in Architecture” and the The Acropolis Museum

Architect and Product Designer Matt Bietz is someone I met and worked with this summer. He is a really great guy, super funny and personable, but also really professional. I appreciate the fluency of his bio, and his picture showcases his work in a non-arrogant way.

  3. Mike and Maaike is one of my favorite industrial design studios. The way they present their work really appeals to me, and they’ve collaborated with a lot of big, really awesome companies in a way that I hope to someday. I also really like their website, although I know some people are really bothered by that style of layout.

    Fashion Designer: Elie Saab

A successful self-taught fashion designer known for his dressmaking. Elie Saab opened his own studio at 18 and continues to design for women of “high-society”

    Raphael de Cardenas

I’ve been motivated by Cardenas’ work as of late, although his work differs much from mine. I’m drawn to the bold effect of his projects, and how he has developed a signature brand without necessarily limiting himself to a singular style.

This is the Magis bio for Enzo Mari, I just finished reading a published interview with him and I believe his design objects are elegant and thoughtful and that his ideas about art, design and architecture are fascinating and provoking.

I think the Industrial Facility “About” section is quite excellent because rather than being a biography, it describes an ethos and addresses prospective clients with their, “Working with Industrial Facility” paragraph.

Sam Hecht and Kim Collins of Industrial Facility are a London based design team definitely worth investigating. They are consistenly contributing to the design dialogue.

Industrial Facility consists of Kim and Sam, Junior designer Phillipp and one intern.
